The Apostle Simon Peter is one of the most famous Apostles. He has been illustrated in cartoons as the gatekeeper of Heaven and hailed by the Catholic Church as the first pope. As a favored Apostle by many, his popularity is most likely due to the ‘before and after’ illustration presented within the Bible. From impulsive restless behaviors to servant leader and spokesman of the Apostles, Preacher of Pentecost, pillar of the Church, and finally martyrdom; one can easily understand Simon Peter’s life is presented by inspiration of the Holy Spirit as an example of God’s active transforming work within a human life submitted and obedient to God (CCCI, 26).

As Christians, we should all desire to be witnesses to the lost around us. The bible states that we are called to be light to a darkened world. A light that not only draws men to the saving power of Jesus Christ, but as Jesus said, “a candle on a candlestick” which “gives light to all that are in the house” (Matthew 5:15)—an example of Christ unifying the church. As servants and priests in our Master’s house, we need to be faithful in our duties to maintain the house; to keep our lights shining.

It’s not surprising that the Church is mocked and God is mocked in America today. The Church talks about signs and wonders more than who Jesus is and what He accomplished on Calvary and after Calvary. If we do agree who Jesus is, we disagree on what He accomplished through His death and resurrection.

When Jesus was on the earth, no truth was attacked more than the truth that Jesus is the Son of God. Satan attacked Jesus by tempting Him with His identity as the Son of God. Satan tried to cause doubt within Jesus and cause Him to use His power for selfish gain (Luke 4:3, 6). It wasn’t that the enemy didn’t know who Jesus was, for he knew exactly who He was because in the previous chapter unclean spirits cried out, “Thou art the Son of God” (Mark 3:11). The reason Jesus was tempted in this way is because God knew that we too would be tempted in the same manner (Hebrews 4:15).

When Jesus walked the earth before Calvary, He demonstrated the power of God through forgiveness, mercy, and through the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit. After His resurrection He said, “… signs and wonders would follow after them that believe” and would end only upon His return for the Church (Mark 16:17).
